Enslaved Individuals
The records listed on these pages are those that include information specific to individuals who were enslaved during their lifetime. Most of the records include descriptive information such as age, sex, complexion (if given), and owner on an individual since surnames were not commonly in use before the Civil War.
To obtain copies, you will need the exact book type, book number/letter, and page number along with the individual's identifying information.
Emancipations - These actions were recorded in many county record books. As such, these will be duplicates from other record sets, but set apart here to assist in locating a specific individual.

The dates given are for the year ending the day before census day, so check the headings on original forms for clarity. If the date is January thru June, the year will be the census year. If the date is June thru December, the year will be 1859, 1869, or 1879 respectively.
Slave Census - This collection of entries can be found in the U.S. Federal Census for the years 1850 and 1860. The only information collected was age, sex and race (black or mulatto) of each enslaved person and the slave owner's name. In some cases, the number of slave houses was given as was whether the person was considered a fugitive from the state. Check original forms for additional information that may not be included here.
Slaves in Deeds - The sale of enslaved people was most often recorded in a county's deed books. As such, these will be duplicates from other record sets, but set apart here to assist in locating a specific individual.
Slaves in Wills - Enslaved people were routinely inherited by their enslavers. The most common way for this to be recorded was through a will. As such, these will be duplicates from other record sets, but set apart here to assist in locating a specific individual.
